For many years, he fought for the rights of immigrants, including many political refugees. The Migration Service was eager to deport them into the hands of the authoritarian regimes of Russia, Belarus, Turkey, or Central Asian autocracies. Maksym conducted many workshops where he spoke about how xenophobia and dehumanization can eventually lead to genocide. And when the full-scale invasion began, he signed up for the army as a volunteer and headed the Berlingo unit.In June 2022, Maksym was captured. But even during the farce which the occupiers called a “trial,” he never lost his sense of humor and personal dignity.
