Volunteering in UkraineIf you google the word „Volunteer,” then you find this: “a person who voluntarily undertakes or expresses a willingness to undertake a service”.This is an extremely broad interpretation of what one can do as a volunteer. Now think about Ukraine and the thousands of people who committed themselves to helping Ukraine.That interpretation translates into a wide domain where those volunteers are active. From organising and bringing humanitarian aid into the country, providing medical training to the Ukrainian security forces, to joining the Ukrainian military to fight. For me personally, volunteering also means putting my experience as a former soldier, which served for 40 years, into areas where I can make a difference. Networking is surely one of the most important tasks that I was and am doing. In a daily changing environment, the decrease in international awareness, followed by a decline in donations and support, makes that task even more important.Working with a Ukrainian NGO like UkraineSOS, for many months now, allows me to better understand the importance of that partnership. I have met very motivated people at UkraineSOS and many friendships came out of those encounters. Every organization evolves as time goes by, which is the only way to maintain the crucial help Ukraine needs, especially as the winter period is coming upon the country.I am now going into my sixth month of being in Ukraine. Not every day is easy, not every day is filled with results. But being persistent in moving forward, finding new partnerships, and improving the old ones, like with UkraineSOS, show that this war can be won and will one day come to an end, where Ukraine is again a free souverain nation, proud of its history, heritage and what they achieved.
