I will discuss the philosophical underpinning of collective action with reference to the work of some of the major philosophers of action, such as Arendt and Habermas as well as Olson and Offe. I will discuss some of the major approaches to the study of collective action – social movement theories, recognition theory, for example – most of which will be explored in the first of the three lectures/seminars at the Summer School. I will conclude with a discussion of the main literature and the rationale for my three contributions to the summer school, these being: (1) the main theories of collection action.
