🇷🇴 A Russian Drone Hits Romania: Russia’s War Has Crossed Another LineOn the night of May 29, a Russian Shahed-type attack drone crossed into Romanian airspace during a massive strike against Ukraine’s Danube region and crashed into a residential apartment building in Galați. The explosion caused a fire and injured civilians, including a woman and a child. This was not the first time Russian drones or their debris have entered Romanian territory. However, it was the first known case of a drone directly striking a densely populated residential area and causing civilian casualties. Romanian authorities described it as the most serious security incident on their territory since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.Romania reacted firmly.President Nicușor Dan condemned the incident as a serious violation of Romanian sovereignty. The Ministry of Defense scrambled F-16 fighter jets and a helicopter, while the Russian ambassador was summoned for explanations. Bucharest openly described the attack as a serious breach of international law.The European Union also responded.European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that Russia’s war of aggression had “crossed another line,” while European leaders emphasized that the consequences of the war are no longer limited to Ukraine but increasingly affect EU territory and citizens.NATO reiterated its commitment to protecting Allied territory and strengthening defenses along its eastern flank. Secretary General Mark Rutte described Russia’s actions as irresponsible and stressed the need for enhanced counter-drone capabilities across the region. The key issue is not whether this strike was intentional. The real problem is that Russia’s strategy of mass drone attacks is creating a direct threat to civilians across Europe. Borders alone cannot guarantee security when hundreds of drones fly near them every night.Ukraine has lived with this reality for more than four years. Our experience demonstrates that saving lives requires a comprehensive approach:• layered air defense systems;• mobile interception units;• dedicated counter-drone capabilities;• rapid public warning systems;• integrated radar coverage and real-time intelligence sharing among allies.Europe can no longer view Russian attacks as solely a Ukrainian problem. What happened in Galați shows that the security of Kyiv, Odesa, Galați, Warsaw, and Vilnius is part of the same security space.A Russian drone striking a residential building on NATO territory is another reminder that modern warfare does not respect borders. The question is no longer whether this threat can reach Europe. The question is whether Europe is prepared to act faster than the threat itself.
