Research shows that 68.3% of iPhone users in the US plan to upgrade to the iPhone 17 at launch. Don't miss out on the excitement!
According to a new survey, nearly 70% of iPhone users in the US plan to upgrade their devices to the iPhone 17 before its official presentation on September 9. This indicates a high level of interest in the new models ahead of the sales launch. The SellCell platform, which specializes in smartphone price comparisons, surveyed over 2000 iPhone owners in the US in August.

According to the data, 68.3% of them intend to purchase the iPhone 17 immediately after its release, which is significantly higher than the 61.9% recorded before the launch of the iPhone 16 in 2024. It is expected that the leading models will be the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, which will account for 38.1% of planned upgrades. The standard iPhone 17 was chosen by 16.7% of respondents, while 13.5% are interested in the new iPhone 17 Air model with an ultra-slim design. Only 3.3% are waiting for a foldable iPhone, which has yet to hit the market.
The survey shows that 72.9% of users are satisfied with their current devices, while 27.1% believe that Apple has lost its edge compared to competitors. The most important factor for upgrading is battery life, cited as the main reason by 53% of respondents. Other motivations include new design and features (36.2%), improved display (34.3%), camera upgrades (28.1%), and advancements in artificial intelligence and software (7.1%).
As for deterrents, 68.9% of users cited price as the main reason for not upgrading. Satisfaction with existing devices is also a significant factor: 71.7% stated they would stick with their current iPhone. Other reasons for holding back on upgrades include inconvenience with eSIM (6.6%), interest in switching to Android (5.3%), and the desire to have a foldable phone currently offered by Samsung and Google. If Apple does not release a foldable iPhone by 2026, 20.1% of respondents would consider switching to Samsung, while 10.2% would consider Google.
Regarding brand loyalty, 69.6% plan to stay with Apple regardless of competitors. Meanwhile, 47.5% are willing to sacrifice battery life for a slim design, while 29.7% find ultra-slim models completely uninteresting. An important feature for 44% of users is artificial intelligence, while 33% consider it less important. More than half of the respondents (44%) named Apple as the leader in the field of artificial intelligence, while Samsung and Google received 6.6% each. Only 10% believe that none of the companies are currently leaders in this area.
Regarding price prospects, 36.8% of users stated they would not upgrade their devices if prices rise significantly, while 29.2% would decide based on how the price increase affects their decision. Only 34% reported that they would continue to buy iPhones regardless of price fluctuations.
The survey was conducted online in August 2025 among more than 2000 adult iPhone owners in the US. The iPhone 17 lineup is expected to be unveiled on Tuesday, September 9.
