Netflix Ends Support for Top Indie Games on Mobile Devices

Netflix is discontinuing support for some of its best indie games. If you played Hades on mobile devices through Netflix, you still have time for a few last attempts while access remains. According to Engadget and confirmations from the Netflix app, the Greek mythology roguelike from Supergiant and 21 other games will soon disappear from the service.

Several games, such as Braid, Katana Zero, and of course, Hades, were exclusively available on mobile platforms through Netflix. This means that after their removal, they will likely no longer be available for download on Android and iOS. The complete list of games leaving Netflix in July includes: Battleship, Braid Anniversary Edition, Carmen Sandiego, CoComelon: Play with JJ, Death's Door, Diner Out: Merge Cafe, Dumb Ways to Survive, Ghost Detective, Hades, Katana ZERO, LEGO Legacy: Heroes Unboxed, Ludo King, Monument Valley 1-3, Rainbow Six: Smol, Raji: An Ancient Epic, SpongeBob: Bubble Pop F.U.N., TED, Tumblewords, The Case of the Golden Idol, The Rise of the Golden Idol, Vineyard Valley.

Most games will be removed on July 14, but Hades will disappear earlier — on July 1. Another game, Carmen Sandiego, currently does not have a specific removal date, only a notice of its imminent removal from the platform. Meanwhile, The Verge has reached out to the developers of these games to inquire about a potential transition to paid versions. A representative from Devolver Digital, Nigel Lowrie, stated that the company plans to release games like Poinpy, Katana Zero, and Death's Door in mobile stores as paid products. While each developer has their own timeline, Devolver is working to make these games available as soon as possible.

The team at Color Gray Games, creators of the Golden Idol series, reported that they learned about this only recently, and details are still being finalized. This indicates that the decision to remove the games was not long in the making. Such a move by Netflix reflects a shift in the platform's strategy in the gaming sector. After halting the acquisition of new studios and closing its own studio for AAA projects, Netflix will focus on games tied to its own shows, multiplayer party games, children's games, and popular franchises with large fan bases.

According to Appfigures, the most popular game on Netflix remains Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas with approximately 37 million downloads. Following closely is Squid Game: Unleashed, which has less than half the downloads of San Andreas. These games will currently remain on the platform, and if you are a fan of any of the removed games, we recommend playing them while they are still available.
