According to biophysicist Michael Reinsteader from McMaster University, the probability of intelligent life existing beyond Earth is extremely high. Research shows that even in our galaxy alone, thousands of civilizations could exist.

Recent discoveries strengthen the hypothesis of multiple worlds where life could have originated. The space telescope "James Webb" has enabled astronomers to detect thousands of exoplanets, conditions on which may resemble those on Earth. Gravitational wave detectors help study the most powerful cosmic phenomena - from black hole collisions to supernova occurrences happening millions of light-years away. These technologies expand our understanding of the conditions that may foster the emergence of life beyond Earth.
At the same time, scientists still debate the very definition of life. On Earth, its foundation consists of DNA, RNA, and protein molecules, combined into a complex system of information transfer and storage. However, life in other corners of the Universe may be built on different biochemical principles. For instance, some researchers suggest the possibility of silicon-based organisms that could use this element to form stable structures akin to bones or shells in terrestrial creatures.
There are also various hypotheses regarding the origin of life on Earth. One of them claims that its building blocks were brought to the planet by meteorites. Scientists have already discovered organic compounds, including amino acids - key components of proteins - on asteroids and comets. Moreover, research shows that amino acids found in cosmic objects exhibit a slight imbalance in their molecular structure, similar to terrestrial biomolecules. This may support the idea that life on Earth has extraterrestrial origins.
The question of the existence of intelligent life in other worlds is often examined through the lens of the Drake Equation, proposed by astronomer Frank Drake in 1961. This formula estimates the number of civilizations capable of interstellar communication, considering factors such as the number of star systems, the presence of planets, and the likelihood of life emerging. An optimistic calculation using this equation suggests that there could be up to 12,500 technologically advanced civilizations in our galaxy alone.
The main argument in favor of extraterrestrial life is statistical. The Universe is incredibly vast: there are about 200 billion trillion stars in its observable part. The probability that Earth is the only place where intelligent life has emerged is estimated to be less than one in 10 billion trillion. According to scientists' calculations, the chance of an intelligent civilization arising on a populated planet is one in 60 billion. This means that on a cosmic scale, the likelihood of other intelligent species existing is extremely high, and they may even be located in our galaxy.
Despite the lack of direct evidence, scientific discoveries in recent years indicate that life in the Universe is not a rarity but a norm. Perhaps the coming decades will provide humanity with a definitive answer to the question it has been asking for centuries.
