Elon Musk Files Lawsuit Against Apple and OpenAI Over Antitrust Conspiracy

Musk's startup xAI has filed a lawsuit in Texas against Apple and OpenAI. The lawsuit alleges a conspiracy aimed at maintaining their dominant position in the artificial intelligence market. Earlier this month, Musk threatened to take legal action because his apps X and Grok were not featured in the "Essential Apps" section of the App Store, and he has now followed through on that promise.

The lawsuit claims that Apple was unexpectedly taken aback by the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence. This allegedly prompted the company to team up with OpenAI in an effort to preserve its monopoly on smartphones. The documentation also highlights that Siri already has integration with ChatGPT, as the ability to reference the chatbot is currently exclusive to OpenAI. xAI argues that if iPhone users seek access to generative chatbots, they must use ChatGPT through Siri, even if they prefer more innovative products like Grok.

According to the lawsuit, users can download any chatbot to their devices, but it will not have the same functionality, convenience, and deep integration as ChatGPT with Siri. Furthermore, there is evidence of Apple working on integrating other chatbots, such as Gemini, into Siri, referencing a statement from Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, regarding negotiations on this matter.

The lawsuit accuses Apple and OpenAI of neglecting competitors, generative chatbots, and apps like X and Grok in their app store. It states that the companies are delaying App Store updates and preventing competition, depriving users of choice. Additionally, xAI lacks access to data from billions of iPhone users to train Grok, as it is not integrated with Siri, unlike ChatGPT.

By accusing Apple and OpenAI of excluding them from a market share of only a few percent, xAI claims that their apps, despite high ratings, do not appear in the "Essential Apps" section of the App Store, nor in the leaderboards. As of August 24, 2025, the top 11 apps in this section did not include X or Grok, and they do not appear further down the list. This also applies to other competitors in the generative chatbot and super app space.

In conclusion, xAI is asking the court to halt the "anti-competitive scheme" of Apple and OpenAI and to compel the companies to pay damages for violating competition laws.
