The New Apple Games App Lets You Challenge Friends

Apple launches a new app that will serve as a central hub for games and gaming features across all its platforms. The new Apple Games app combines Apple Arcade, App Store recommendations, your game library, and friends list all in one place. The company describes it as a "universal center for gaming and playing with friends." The app will be available on iPhone, iPad, and Mac this fall.

In addition to gathering your games, you will be able to view leaderboards and take on challenges created by developers. This will enable multiplayer capabilities even in single-player games. Apple has also added a Game Overlay feature for iPad and Mac, allowing access to Game Center features, friends list, and settings without leaving the game.

In 2023, the company introduced a gaming mode to Mac with macOS Sonoma, enhancing performance for gaming. Last year, this mode was also introduced in iOS 18. Additionally, Apple offers tools similar to Proton for running Windows games on Mac.

The company is actively promoting ray tracing capabilities in the new iPhone chips and offers subscriptions for Apple Arcade games. Apple is also working on ports of major AAA games, such as Death Stranding by Hideo Kojima, Assassin's Creed Mirage, and several titles from the Resident Evil series (2, 3, 4, 7, Village). At the same time, reports indicate that some of these projects have not achieved significant commercial success.
