It may not be as spectacular as, for example, the Perseids, but it boasts one unique feature. Meteors often leave persistent trails in the sky and sometimes even transform into bright bolides.

The meteor shower originates from the dust trail left by comet C|1861 G1 Thatcher, which orbits the Sun every 415.5 years. Once a year, Earth passes through this field, causing scattered fragments of the wandering cosmic object to burn up in our atmosphere and create a bright show in the sky.

This occurs every April and lasts about two weeks. This year, the Lyrids began on April 15 and will continue until April 29. They will reach their peak between Sunday (April 21) and Monday (April 22). On this night, dozens of meteors will be visible. The shower is also known for rare outbursts that can bring up to 100 meteors per hour, although this has only happened a few times in the last 200 years.

Unfortunately, this year the peak coincides with the nearly full "Pink Moon." This means that the light from our cosmic satellite may partially diminish the brightness of the meteor shower.
