According to Steam's support service, starting January 1, 2024, the launcher will stop working on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1. The decision is explained by the discontinuation of support for these versions by the Google Chrome browser, which the store and some social features in Steam rely on. Another reason cited is the features and security updates necessary for the operation of future versions of Steam, which are only available on Windows 10 and newer.

Recent hardware statistics from Valve revealed that among all computers running Steam, only 1% operate on versions below Windows 10. While this may seem small, as of December 2023, the estimated number of Steam users is 1.2 billion, meaning around 12 million people will be left without access to games.

Meanwhile, the developers of the popular battle royale PUBG announced that they will stop supporting the game on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 starting January 1, 2024 - not only on Steam but also on other platforms, including Epic Games and Kakao. This decision is linked to prioritizing support and ensuring the functionality of the anti-cheat system on current versions of Windows.
