Subnautica 2 sells over 1M copies and hits 460K+ concurrent players on Steam shortly after launch. Early access to last ~2-3 years.
Subnautica 2 rockets up Steam charts in under an hour
Subnautica 2, the new underwater survival game from Unknown Worlds, shot up Steam's charts in less than an hour after launch. According to a press release, the game has already sold more than one million copies. As of this writing, Steam shows Subnautica 2 as the fourth-most played title on the platform with over 460,000 concurrent players.

Only Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, and PUBG: Battlegrounds currently have higher concurrent player counts on Steam.
Player counts likely higher across platforms
Steam's figures do not include players on the Epic Games Store or Xbox, where Subnautica 2 is also available in early access. Combining those platforms would push the total concurrent player count even higher. This cross-platform interest underscores the game's broad appeal among survival and exploration fans.
Why the launch was so big
The strong debut isn't entirely surprising. Pre-launch, Subnautica 2 amassed five million wishlists on Steam and was the platform's most-wishlisted game. It follows the well-received Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero, which built a passionate community eager for a true sequel.
Legal drama and delays
The game's path to early access included a public legal dispute between Unknown Worlds executives and the studio's owner, Krafton. The conflict coincided with a delay from an originally planned 2025 early access release, which developers said was influenced by playtest feedback and internal changes.
After a judge's March ruling that reinstated the studio's CEO and extended the eligibility window for a potential developer bonus, Unknown Worlds set a new early access launch date.
Early access plans and development timeline
Unknown Worlds expects the early access period to last about two to three years. During this time the studio plans to iterate on gameplay, expand content, and respond to community feedback. Early access roadmaps typically include regular updates, bug fixes, and content drops such as new biomes, creatures, and story elements—all likely priorities for Subnautica 2.
What this means for players and the industry
- High concurrent players highlight strong demand for single-player survival exploration titles.
- Cross-platform sales show that early access launches can perform well beyond Steam when supported on other stores and consoles.
- Transparent development and frequent community engagement during early access can sustain long-term interest.
