Epic Games launches an experimental "conversations" tool for AI NPCs in Fortnite, with safety rules and Gemini-powered voices.
Epic Games lets creators test AI-powered characters in Fortnite
Epic Games is rolling out a new "conversations" tool that lets Fortnite creators build AI-powered non-player characters (NPCs) players can talk and interact with. The feature follows last year's controversial AI-powered Darth Vader recreation and aims to give developers a more flexible way to add unscripted dialogue and dynamic interactions to their islands.

What the conversations tool does
Instead of writing rigid dialogue trees, creators define a character's persona with prompts that describe how the character thinks, what they know, and how they behave. The tool then uses those prompts to generate responses during player interactions.
- Creators pick a matching voice for the character.
- Audio inputs are processed and text responses are generated by Google's Gemini 3.1 Flash-Lite models.
- ElevenLabs converts the generated text into voiced outputs.
"You define who the character is with simple prompts—how they think, what they know, and how they behave—and then select a voice that matches their persona."
Safety rules and limits for creators
Epic updated its developer rules to reduce risks and misuse of AI characters. Important restrictions include:
- Do not create personas designed to provide medical or mental health guidance.
- Do not create personas that role-play as, simulate, or impersonate a date, romantic partner, or other intimate companion.
- Do not attempt to circumvent or undermine Epic's safety systems or content restrictions.
These rules aim to prevent harmful outputs and problematic interactions, such as impersonation, unsafe advice, or unwanted romantic simulations.
Availability and rollout
The conversations tool is currently labeled "experimental." Developers can test it, but they cannot publish experiences that use AI characters until the feature reaches beta. Epic has not shared a timeline for the beta launch.
An Epic spokesperson, Jake Jones, declined to provide a timeline for wider availability.
Why this matters for Fortnite and the gaming ecosystem
The conversations feature fits Epic's broader plan to expand Fortnite beyond a single game into a platform hosting diverse, creator-made experiences. AI NPCs could serve as quest givers, narrators, shopkeepers, or other dynamic characters that adapt to player choices.
However, Epic faces challenges in this transition. The company announced layoffs affecting more than 1,000 employees after a downturn in Fortnite engagement that began in 2025. That decline raises questions about how quickly new creator tools will drive renewed player interest.
Examples and potential uses
- Quest givers that respond differently based on prior player actions.
- In-world narrators that adapt storytelling to player behavior.
- Shopkeepers who recommend items based on a player's inventory or play style.
As developers experiment with these AI characters, we can expect new creative use cases—and more discussions about safety, moderation, and quality control.
