Google lets users ask follow-up questions from AI Overviews and makes Gemini 3 the default, enabling deeper conversational search.
Google brings conversational follow-ups to AI Overviews
Google is rolling out a new feature that lets users ask follow-up questions directly from AI Overviews — the summaries that appear at the top of Search results. Instead of treating Overviews as one-off snapshots, the update allows users to continue the interaction in AI Mode, Google's conversational Search feature for complex questions.

Gemini 3 becomes the default for Overviews
Google also confirmed that Gemini 3 is now the global default model for AI Overviews. According to the company, moving to Gemini 3 delivers a "best-in-class AI response right on the search results page." That should improve relevance and fluency for a wide range of queries, from quick facts to multi-step research.
"People come to Search for an incredibly wide range of questions... you should be able to seamlessly tap into a powerful conversational AI experience." — Robby Stein, VP of Product, Google Search
Why this matters
These changes mark a shift from static search results toward an interactive, AI-driven experience. Users can now:
- Move seamlessly from a quick summary to a deeper conversation while preserving context.
- Ask clarifying or follow-up questions without retyping the original query.
- Explore complex topics in a back-and-forth format that feels natural and continuous.
How Google tested the experience
Google says internal testing shows users prefer an experience that flows into conversation. Preserving context from AI Overviews when users ask follow-ups makes Search more helpful, especially for multi-step tasks like planning trips, researching health topics, or comparing technical specs.
Personal Intelligence and cross-product integration
The rollout follows Google's recent announcement that it's adding "Personal Intelligence" to AI Mode. This feature allows the assistant to tap into Gmail and Google Photos — with permission — to produce more personalized responses. Google first introduced Personal Intelligence in the Gemini app, connecting Gmail, Photos, Search, and YouTube history so the assistant can tailor answers to an individual's data and activity.
AI Overviews expand beyond Search
Google recently added AI Overviews to Gmail too. Now users can search their inbox with natural language and get concise answers instead of relying solely on keyword searches and opening multiple emails. The company released this feature alongside a new AI-powered Inbox designed to speed up email triage and summarization.
Implications for users and creators
For general users, the changes mean faster, more conversational access to information across Google products. For content creators and publishers, including those covering gaming news and other fast-moving beats, AI Overviews could influence how content surfaces in search — especially for queries demanding concise summaries or comparison-style answers.
Example use cases
- Gaming news: Ask for a quick summary of a recent game announcement, then follow up to compare platforms, release windows, or system requirements.
- Travel planning: Start with destination highlights, then ask follow-ups about visas, recommended itineraries, or packing tips.
- Email triage: Summarize a thread in Gmail and ask for the key action items without opening each message.
What's next
Google continues to refine conversational Search and expand integrations with user data (with consent). Expect more seamless transitions between quick answers and deeper AI conversations, and watch how these changes affect search behavior across topics like gaming news, tech, and consumer information.
