Dispatch Season 2 can't take "GTA 6 amounts of time", fret Adhoc, as they decide whether or not to make it

Ad Hoc are thinking seriously about Dispatch Season 2, but they're worried about living up to fan expectations given a shorter development window.

Adhoc Studios weighs a Dispatch Season 2

Adhoc Studios still aren't sure whether they'll make a second season of Dispatch, their startlingly popular Telltale-style superhero comedy adventure, but they're thinking about it very "seriously".

Dispatch Season 2 can't take "GTA 6 amounts of time", fret Adhoc, as they decide whether or not to make it

Where things stand

Dispatch's first season took seven years to develop, partly because the team was dropped by its publisher part-way through. Game director Nick Herman told Eurogamer's Robert Purchese there were "zero expectations for Season 1 - external expectations. People just had to show up and enjoy it and not have a bunch of theories and stuff in their head."

Why Season 2 feels different

The same low-pressure environment won't apply to a follow-up. The developers already find the enthusiasm for a second season daunting. Herman said: "People are mad that we haven't told them what we're doing. It's the new problem, right? It's like, are you doing it? Are you not doing it? We're days away from really sitting down and having the time - because we've had to support the game - where we're going to really sit down and lay those plans out."

Time pressure and creative expectations

Lead writer Pierre Shorette compared sequels to albums: "you have your whole life to write your first album and then eight months to write your second." He stressed the contrast between the leisurely seven-year build of Season 1 and the faster turnaround expected if they make Season 2.

Aspect Season 1 Potential Season 2
Development time Seven years Likely much shorter
External expectations Minimal High
Publisher involvement Dropped mid-development Unclear

What Adhoc is deciding next

The team admits the pressure: they want to meet demand but worry about "bottling the lightning twice," especially if they aim to release another season quickly. Shorette joked about GTA 6-level expectations: "We're taking GTA 6 amounts of time on this shit... it better be good."

  • They will soon dedicate time to plan Season 2 properly.
  • They must balance quality against much shorter timelines.
  • They face strong community expectations for clarity and direction.

Opinion and possible directions

I would play another season of Dispatch, though I'd like a change of protagonist. That said, I also couldn't fault Adhoc for hanging up their capes, retiring their mystic amulets and trying something new. Seven years is a long time to spend thinking about the likes of Waterboy.

Pro tips for Adhoc Studios

Prioritize a clear communication plan and realistic milestones before announcing Season 2 to avoid fueling fan frustration.

FAQ

Will Adhoc Studios make Dispatch Season 2?

They're undecided but seriously considering it; a formal plan is imminent after current post-launch support wraps up.

Why did Season 1 take seven years?

Development stretched to seven years partly because the project lost its publisher mid-development, which delayed progress and added uncertainty.
