Switch 2 Update Blocks Some Third-Party Docks, Nintendo Remains Silent on Reasons

The system update (version 21.0.0) for the Switch 2 console from Nintendo has caused unexpected consequences: some third-party docks have stopped functioning properly. In the first weeks after the summer release, the company tried to find ways to trick the system into believing that an original Nintendo dock, which comes with each console, was connected. Now, difficulties have arisen, and many users are forced to look for alternative solutions.

Many believe that Nintendo did this intentionally. According to a company comment to Kotaku, they "do not intend to hinder or invalidate the compatibility of legal third-party docks." On one hand, it seemed that the latest update had no intention of causing these issues. On the other hand, it is clear that Nintendo has set a boundary between legal and illegal third-party devices, many of which were made without permission. This creates confusion, as some third-party docks continue to work without issues. For example, I tested the Viture Pro mobile dock — one of the first third-party models supporting Switch 2, and it works just as before, with the same firmware.

Without additional information from Nintendo, it is difficult to predict what will happen next. Will other docks be banned? Will Nintendo change the interaction protocol with its devices to complicate life for third-party manufacturers? Perhaps the company will develop a certification system, something like Apple MFi, which will allow third-party companies to pay for official support of their devices with secure ports. However, it is evident that Nintendo aims to encourage consumers to use the official, more expensive dock by creating barriers for cheaper alternatives.

This situation presents new challenges for third-party manufacturers like Genki and JSAUX. They plan to release compact docks the size of a power adapter this fall. While support for Switch 2 is mentioned in their features, it will soon become clear whether these advantages will remain by the time of launch.
