Valve is testing a new low power mode for the Steam Deck, which allows users to continue downloading games and updates even with the screen turned off. This feature is currently available in beta versions and Preview updates. When a user presses the power button during a download, a dialog box appears offering to continue the process with the display off. By selecting this option, the device enters a power-saving mode with the screen off, but the download continues. If any button is pressed or the device is moved, a screen showing the download progress appears. By default, this feature is activated when connected to a power source, but it can also be enabled for battery operation. If the battery charge drops below 20%, the Steam Deck will automatically enter sleep mode. This innovation addresses the issue of high energy consumption during downloads and helps prevent the device from overheating, especially if it is accidentally left in a bag. Initially, Valve did not plan to add this option, but it is now available for the beta version and users seeking greater energy efficiency.
