GTA VI Developer Accused of Union Suppression Amid Mass Layoffs

Rockstar Games has laid off between 30 and 40 employees, as previously reported by Bloomberg. According to the Independent Workers' Union of Great Britain (IWGB), all those laid off were participants in a private union chat on Discord and were either union members or attempting to form one at Rockstar. IWGB President Alex Marshall called these actions "the most blatant and cruel act of union suppression in the history of the gaming industry." Alan Lewis, head of global corporate communications at Rockstar and its parent company Take-Two Interactive, stated that the layoffs occurred "due to gross misconduct, and for no other reason," without providing further details. The layoffs affected Rockstar offices in the UK and Canada.

This happened seven months before the scheduled release of Grand Theft Auto VI. Initially, the launch was planned for this fall, but a few months ago, Rockstar pushed the release date to May 26, 2026, citing the need for additional time to achieve the desired quality.

IWGB President Alex Marshall added: "This brazen disregard for the law and the lives of workers who generate billions is an affront to fans and the global industry. Despite this targeted attack on worker organization, the Rockstar union will not be stopped. They will continue to fight for respect and better working conditions, pouring their blood, sweat, and creativity into the games loved by millions. IWGB will use all legal means to seek the reinstatement of union members and compensation."

In response to the accusations, Alan Lewis emphasized: "We strive to create the best entertainment products in the world while providing our teams with a positive work environment and opportunities for career growth. Our culture is based on teamwork, excellence, and kindness. Rockstar Games has laid off a small number of employees for gross misconduct and no other reason.
