YouTube Tightens Age Restrictions on "Graphic Violence" in Video Game Content

YouTube is updating its policy by introducing age restrictions for a greater amount of content featuring video games that contain scenes of graphic violence. This update will take effect on November 17 and will prohibit users under 18 years old or those who are not logged in from viewing videos of games that focus on realistic human characters in scenes of mass violence, torture, or combat. In making decisions about restrictions, YouTube will consider the duration of the graphic scene, its close-up or main focus, and whether the violence is depicted against a character that resembles a real person. Creators have the option to choose how to conduct missions to avoid content that would trigger restrictions. Creators can also blur or hide scenes of violence. These updates complement the existing policy that allows for restrictions on videos depicting dramatized violence focused on torture, serious injuries, or violent deaths with blood, except for video games. According to the policy, such violence is generally not removed if the content or metadata indicates that it is fictional or this is evident from the video itself, such as in animations or games. Bulwinkle added that YouTube's policies are designed to adapt to changes in the digital world. The update also strengthens the bans on directing users to online gambling with digital goods, such as game skins, cosmetics, or NFTs. In March, YouTube stopped allowing creators to mention or showcase online gambling services without Google's permission. Since then, the platform has begun blocking approved gambling content for youth under 18 years old and is now implementing age restrictions for social casinos.
