iPhone XX? 6 Features Discussed for Apple's 20th Anniversary

In 2017, Apple introduced the iPhone X with a new design, featuring Face ID, a notch, and minimal bezels, which allowed for an increased display area. As the 20th anniversary of the iPhone approaches in 2027, the company aims to further enhance the bezel-less design with a curved display. Although there are still two years until this date, rumors suggest significant changes in future models.

Apple is expected to move towards a completely bezel-less display with curved edges, creating the impression of a seamless glass surface without notches or frames. At the same time, the manufacturer is working on enhancing screen durability by using Ceramic Shield 2, which is more resistant to scratches and breakage. While Samsung has long used curved displays in its Galaxy line, recent models, such as the Galaxy S24 Ultra, have moved away from this design, and Apple may follow suit by creating a flat foldable display.

Regarding the front camera, various rumors circulate: some sources claim that Face ID under the display will become a reality, while others suggest a small notch for the front camera will remain. Meanwhile, Apple plans to utilize brighter and thinner OLED displays with Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) technology, which allows for reduced screen thickness and improved brightness and energy efficiency. Additionally, displays with deeply curved edges will feature a light diffusion layer, ensuring uniform brightness across the entire surface.

The model lineup will see improvements in photography: the introduction of sensors with enhanced HDR for greater dynamic range is expected, allowing for the capture of details in both bright and dark areas within a single shot. This will bring the camera closer to professional cinematic systems.

Apple is also working on its own modems to replace Qualcomm and enhance energy efficiency and network connection speeds. It is expected that by 2027, modems will surpass Qualcomm's specifications, and A-series chips will transition to a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. Currently, TSMC is developing a 1.4-nanometer process, but it will not be available until at least 2028.

As for the models, Apple is likely to skip the iPhone 19 and transition from the iPhone 18 to the iPhone 20 or iPhone XX to highlight the anniversary. The release of iPhone 17 took place in 2025, and the iPhone 18 model is expected in 2026. Therefore, the first foldable iPhone may debut in 2027, although earlier information suggested a possible delay until 2027.

The first iPhone was announced in January 2007 and launched in June of the same year. Thus, June 29, 2027, will mark the 20th anniversary. It is predicted that Apple will not release a new device outside of the traditional September announcement, but may potentially provide an official preview or hint at the anniversary phone earlier in the year.
