OpenAI today introduced ChatGPT Atlas — a new specialized AI browser with ChatGPT integration. The browser was built around the idea: "What if you could interact with your web browser?" In the "Ask ChatGPT" sidebar, users can pose questions to the chatbot without needing to navigate to the ChatGPT site or app. ChatGPT is capable of performing various functions: providing page summaries, comparing products, answering questions about website content, editing and checking code — all because it can see exactly what the user is looking at.

The browser features memory for personalization, and Atlas learns about the user over time. For searches, a response based on ChatGPT is opened, but there are quick tabs for accessing traditional search results, images, and other options. The ChatGPT sidebar remains open during browsing, providing constant support.

The new browser includes an OpenAI agent that can perform various actions and complete web tasks: booking restaurants, ordering groceries, creating shopping lists from recipes, or filling out online forms. There is also a "Cursor Chat" tool for editing text directly in the browser. Standard features — tabs, bookmarks, history, and password saving — remain available. The design is user-friendly and familiar, with a search field similar to Safari or Chrome.

Initially, ChatGPT Atlas launches on macOS, with versions for iOS, Android, and Windows coming soon. The web browser from OpenAI will compete with Safari from Apple and Chrome from Google. Meanwhile, Safari currently lacks built-in AI integration, while Chrome already supports it. With the emergence of AI browsers from Google, OpenAI, and Perplexity, companies will likely need to integrate Siri and other AI tools into Safari to remain competitive.

ChatGPT Atlas is available for macOS starting today, but the agent mode is currently only available for Plus and Pro users.
