Steam removed the game after a cryptocurrency theft of over $150,000.

Steam removed a game that contained malware stealing cryptocurrency from the wallets of hundreds of users, reports Bleeping Computer. The game in question is the free 2D platformer BlockBlasters, which collected over $150,000 from victims, including a streamer who raised money for cancer treatment—$32,000. According to the malware tracker vx-underground on Twitter, the attackers conducted a targeted phishing campaign, attempting to persuade some streamers to promote the game for a reward. "Unfortunately, the game on Steam was a cryptocurrency thief disguised as a legitimate video game," noted vx-underground.

BlockBlasters appeared on Steam on July 30, but was quietly removed on August 30 after the cryptocurrency thief was added to the game. The developer was Genesis Interactive, and the game received over 200 very positive reviews. The malware went unnoticed until Latvian streamer Raivo Plavnieks (Rastaland.TV), who is battling stage four cancer, reported a loss of $32,000 after downloading the game.

In addition to BlockBlasters, Steam also removed other games with malicious code, including PirateFi, Sniper: Phantom's Resolution, and Chemia. The removal of the game took place on September 21. Valve has not yet commented on the situation.
