Google has confirmed that its generative AI for home, Gemini, which will replace Google Assistant, will begin a gradual rollout starting October 1 through an early access program. This is a significant update for the smart home platform and highlights the slow pace of AI technology adoption compared to Siri at Apple. At the Made by Google 2025 event, the company announced that Gemini for home will be available on all existing Nest smart speakers and displays, as well as on new devices.

The platform utilizes Google's latest AI models to create more natural conversations, contextual thinking, and multi-step commands. Google noted that the update retains the familiar activation phrase "Hey, Google," but removes the need for rigid phrasing, allowing users to speak more naturally. Demonstrations showcased Gemini's ability to execute chained instructions, such as: "Dim the lights and set the temperature to 72 degrees," or interpret exceptions in commands, like: "Turn off the lights everywhere except my bedroom."
The platform also expands the functionality of the voice assistant, adding the ability to create shopping lists, suggest recipes, assist with technical issues, and provide travel tips. Additionally, users will be able to engage in open conversations through the Gemini Live feature, which eliminates the need to repeat the wake word during discussions.
