Changes to Anthropic's Privacy Policy and Terms of Use

Anthropic has announced updates to its terms of use and privacy policy. The new rules involve training its AI chatbot Claude based on user data. From now on, new users will have the option to opt out of this during registration, while existing users will receive a pop-up window offering them a choice.

Anthropic now trains Claude based on your chats, here's how to opt out

In the pop-up window titled "Update to Terms of Use and Privacy Policy," users can uncheck the option "You can help improve Claude" — this will prevent their chats from being used for model training. Accepting the new terms allows the use of all new or restored chats. At the same time, users must decide whether they agree to this by September 28, 2025, to continue using Claude.

Users can also opt out of training in the Claude settings by selecting the "Privacy" option and turning off "Help improve Claude." The company claims that the new training policies will enable the creation of more capable and useful AI models, as well as enhance protection against abuse and fraud.

The changes apply to users of the Claude Free, Pro, and Max plans, but do not apply to services operating under commercial terms, such as Claude for Work or Claude for Education. Additionally, Anthropic continues to retain user data for up to five years for training purposes, if they have allowed their data to be used. Those who opt out will be able to keep their conversations without them being used for training for 30 days, as before.

The company assures that automated tools and processes are used to filter sensitive data, and information is not shared with third parties. Previously, Anthropic did not use user conversations for training without their consent, which is now changing with the updated terms.
