Proton Launches New Two-Factor Authentication App

Today, Proton launched Proton Authenticator — a free two-factor authentication app available on all major platforms, including iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux. This open-source software generates time-based one-time passwords, providing an additional layer of security beyond standard login credentials.

Unlike competitors such as Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator, Proton Authenticator offers encrypted backup and synchronization across devices without ads or tracking. The Swiss company claims that users can quickly import existing 2FA tokens from other apps, and the app works offline while automatically storing authentication codes.

Éamon Maguire, Head of Account Security at Proton, stated: "Two-factor authentication is essential for everyone — not just for those who value privacy. We believe that strong security should not come at the expense of convenience or privacy. That's why we created Proton Authenticator — to provide access to your 2FA codes anytime, without relying on Google or Microsoft."

Proton emphasizes that account attacks cost billions of dollars annually, making two-factor authentication increasingly important. Using authentication apps is more secure than SMS codes, which are vulnerable to SIM swap attacks.

You can download Proton Authenticator from the official Proton website. The app was introduced as part of the company's recent portfolio expansion — alongside Lumo, a privacy-focused chatbot that does not store conversation records and does not use user data to train models.
