Jony Ive reveals details of a new AI device that won't be wearable, according to court documents.
It turned out that the new device designed by Jony Ive for OpenAI will not be a wearable, as initially assumed. This was revealed in internal court documents. Details about this secret collaboration between Apple's former chief designer and OpenAI to create a new consumer AI product are gradually coming to light.
According to the documents, the device is positioned as a "third main device" that can be kept in a pocket or on a desk next to a MacBook Pro and iPhone. However, it will not be an ear or wearable device, which has raised eyebrows. Notably, OpenAI removed mentions of the startup io, which Ive helped found, from its website this week due to a trademark lawsuit from the company iyO, which develops specialized headphones that connect to other devices.
To support its position, iyO filed court documents with emails indicating that executives from io and OpenAI were aware of the existence of an ear device called "the world's first audio computer," and even requested a demonstration of this product. Meanwhile, io co-founder and former Apple executive Tang Tang responded by filing court documents stating that the first device they plan to release will not be an ear device and will not be wearable.
According to the documents, this device is expected to hit the market at least a year from now. This contradicts recent predictions by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who suggested that users would be able to wear it around their necks, like a necklace. However, even before the legal proceedings, his assumption seemed speculative, as Ive apparently is not keen on creating body-worn devices.
Previous leaks indicated that the device would be pocket-sized, with environmental awareness and no screens. Altman, the head of OpenAI, called it "the coolest tech device in the world" after testing the prototype at home. The company acquired Ive's startup io for $6.5 billion, and Altman suggested that this deal could increase the company's valuation by a trillion dollars.
The goal is to launch this device by the end of 2026 and achieve 100 million units sold faster than any other company before. If you were expecting more specific details, you might be disappointed — the new information does not provide much clarity. It is worth noting that a few years ago, Ive controlled the design of consumer electronics, and one can only hope that this device proves to be more reliable than the butterfly keyboard.
