Apple is considering the use of generative artificial intelligence to accelerate the development of its own chips. According to hardware chief Johny Srouji, the company is exploring how generative AI methods can assist in chip design, reducing development time. He discussed this during a presentation in Belgium, where he received an award from the research group Imec.
"Generative AI methods have great potential to perform more design work in less time, which can significantly enhance productivity," he noted. Srouji also mentioned the role of companies involved in electronic design automation, such as Cadence and Synopsys. According to him, they are critical for supporting the complexity of modern chips. These companies are likely to compete for the integration of artificial intelligence into their design software.
This news comes amid criticism of Apple for allegedly lagging in the consumer artificial intelligence sector. While competitors like Google and OpenAI dominate the headlines, Apple is trying to catch up by adopting a more holistic approach. The company is likely using AI behind the scenes for chip development, leaving user-facing functionalities intact.
