There will be either fewer or more awkward situations with zippers.
The Japanese company YKK, the world's largest zipper manufacturer, has introduced a prototype of a self-driving zipper slider with a built-in motor and transmission mechanism. It closes automatically with the push of a button (currently via a wired remote).

The efficiency and speed of the self-driving lock were demonstrated in a video featuring a 5-meter membrane. The zipper closed itself in 40 seconds, while a person would need a ladder to accomplish this task. The developers also showcased that the technology can be applied in various fields, not just in clothing production.
The prototype uses a rotating mechanism that guides the zipper teeth on both sides and pulls the zipper together. In another video, it is shown that a power cable is connected to the device when it self-closes, which is not very practical. This issue is planned to be resolved with a built-in battery.
Additionally, the developers need to further reduce the size of the zipper and develop safety mechanisms to make it usable in clothing. When this will happen remains unknown.
