Institute of the Russian Language: Stress in the Word "Zvonit" Moves to the First Syllable

The stress in the word "zvonit" will eventually shift to the first syllable - "zvOnit". This was stated by Maria Kalenchuk, Doctor of Philology and Senior Researcher at the V.V. Vinogradov Institute of the Russian Language, in a conversation with "RIA Novosti".

According to her, this shift has already begun, although it is developing slowly. She noted that "it is already changing before our eyes" and emphasized that this is not a coincidence.

The philologist added that there are already many verbs in the Russian language, such as "varit", "solit", "druzhit", and many others, where the stress has long shifted to the first syllable. The word "zvonit" just happens to be among those lagging behind, but since the process of change has started, there is a high likelihood that it will reach a logical conclusion.

Thus, the established "zvonIt" may give way to the variant "zvOnit" - not due to illiteracy, but because of the natural processes occurring in the Russian language.
