Apple is preparing the biggest update for the iPhone system.

In his latest report, Bloomberg insider Mark Gurman shared the main changes to expect from iOS 18. He writes that in addition to a set of artificial intelligence-based features, iOS 18 will include updates to most popular built-in apps on the iPhone, including "Photos," "Mail," "Notes," and "Fitness." The "Calculator" app will also be enhanced with new capabilities and will be available on the iPad for the first time.

Moving icons, AI, and modular design: details about the main changes in iOS 18

Confirming previous reports, Gurman noted that the iPhone home screen will indeed receive the long-awaited option for free placement of icons without alignment to the usual grid.

The insider also reported a number of changes in the appearance. In particular, he mentioned that the design of apps will become more "modular" and easier to update and customize.

It seems that Apple is working on standardizing the user interface component library it uses in its apps. This will make it easier for development teams to update over time, especially as they increasingly become available as universal apps spanning iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, tvOS, and VisionOS.

We will know for sure when Apple officially announces iOS 18 at the WWDC developer conference in June. Before this event, on May 7, there will be an announcement of the new iPad Pro and iPad Air lineup.
