Scammers: which messaging app has the highest number? Experts reveal the surprising findings.
Vice reports that Discord has quickly become the primary platform for cryptocurrency projects.
The main platform for global crypto projects - the gaming messenger Discord - is a breeding ground for scammers, spam, malware, and phishing attacks. This is how Vice experts describe the platform.
Discord, which has quickly replaced TeamSpeak and Skype, was explored in May 2022 by John Fraser, the founder of the Ethereum-based platform Origin. Journalists are particularly focused on his work.

John Fraser attempted to set up an automated script to notify him when certain keywords were mentioned on the server. He was unable to access several private chats and learned about the users, descriptions, and names of those chats.
Given that a large number of cryptocurrency projects use the Discord platform, one can find out, for example, what plans a particular cryptocurrency project has, when it intends to launch its token, and when it will be registered on Coinbase. This poses a significant risk for new coins, as it can affect their price.
Thus, Fraser discovered a security gap in the messenger. Lists of participants, usernames of private channel users, individuals conducting multi-signature transactions, and their wallets can be exposed by anyone.
The expert's work highlights that there are numerous scammers on Discord. They send phishing links, hack servers and accounts. Cryptocurrency enthusiasts trust messages that they supposedly receive from official bots, which are actually sent by scammers. The platform simply lacks protection against this type of spam.
Hackers can also pose as top managers of well-known companies. Scammers use the Discord Nitro subscription for this purpose - it allows them to use different nicknames across various servers. Another method of deception.
