In their study, the scientists relied on data from the UK Biobank. Information about the genetics, lifestyle, and health status of 500,000 individuals aged 40 to 69 was collected from large datasets.

The researchers aimed to determine how the combination of genetic variants is related to habitual daytime napping, brain volume, cognitive functions, and other health aspects.

The scientists noted that this study is of great interest, as the reduction in brain size that occurs with age accelerates in individuals with cognitive issues and neurodegenerative diseases, and some studies suggest this may also be linked to sleep problems.

As a result of the new research, the scientists made several intriguing conclusions, the main one indicating that regular daytime napping may provide some protection against neurodegenerative changes.

Dr. Victoria Garfield, a co-author of the study from University College London, emphasized that a short daytime nap may help preserve brain volume, potentially contributing to the prevention of dementia.

Garfield added that there are many risk factors that can lead to dementia, while many other factors can also influence brain volume. This new study only shows a newly discovered connection. Further exploration of the importance of sleep may provide more accurate data on its impact on human health.
