"Ukrainian artistic representation doesn’t have to speak only about itself or for itself. As we endure these extreme trials, we can only be truly heard through dialogue with those who share similar experiences. For centuries, Moscow acted as a mentor in interpreting the cultures and histories of subjugated nations. Our knowledge of other “cellmates in the prison of peoples” came only through the imperial center. This was true not only for post-Soviet countries, but for many nations of Central and Eastern Europe who endured colonization under various empires. And yet it was the so-called “historic nations” — to borrow Hegel’s term — whose capitals we were taught to emulate, that ultimately brought the world to its current state.I began exploring these ideas as early as 2019 in the Exodus project, developed during my residency at Biruchiy in Montenegro.
