That era is over. A student today holds more information in one hand than our greatest libraries once contained. What’s scarce now isn’t information. It’s judgment.So I argue something uncomfortable: a meaningful share of what universities teach is already obsolete — and the institutions that will lead are the ones honest enough to admit it and change first. That admission is harder than it sounds, because universities are strangely reluctant to apply to themselves the transformation they teach. We lecture on digital change in rooms that have never experienced any. We study innovation as a subject while our own processes remain untouched by it. A university that preaches the future while organizing itself around the past forfeits its authority to speak about either. Reconstruction is usually imagined as restoring what was destroyed. I think that is a failure of imagination. To rebuild the university we had before the war would be to rebuild a model the world has already made obsolete. Reconstruction is not repair. It is a rare and terrible opportunity to redesign – to build education, research, and the institutions around them from the beginning, around intelligent systems that remain deeply human-centered. Countries that were never forced to stop rarely get to start again. Ukraine has been forced to stop.
